Sepsis: An Overview

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by an extreme immune response to infection and is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Globally, there are approximately 48.9 million sepsis cases annually, leading to 11 million deaths. Timely intervention is crucial as mortality rates increase by 8% for each hour of delay in administering antimicrobials. Sepsis is indiscriminate and it always begins with an infection.

Key Statistics

R

Sepsis costs the NHS between £1.5 and £2 billion each year, and the wider economy at least £11 billion

R

5 people die with sepsis every hour in the UK

R

As many as 8% of pediatric sepsis cases may be missing during emergency department visits in the US

Timely and appropriate antibiotic therapy is vital for managing sepsis; however, it has been noted that antibiotics are often prescribed to patients with non-bacterial infections. This practice heightens antibiotic selection pressure and contributes to the rise of multidrug-resistant organisms. Antibiotic resistance has become a significant global concern and is generating an estimated cost to the NHS of £180 million per year.

At Attomarker, we believe in enhancing sepsis management protocols and contributing to the global effort of saving lives and reducing AMR by promoting antibiotic stewardship. Through our cutting-edge Human Infection Chip, we strive to provide rapid and accurate detection of infections that can lead to sepsis, playing our part in the fight for OneWorld Health and a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
