Long COVID: An Overview

Long COVID is when an individual who has contracted COVID-19 continues to experience symptoms of the virus (e.g. tiredness, fever, sleep difficulty, neurological, cognitive symptoms and more…), which are often severe, several weeks/ months after initial infection. Over 2 million people in the UK have been affected by Long COVID and an estimated 20 million in the USA. While symptoms experienced vary, some of the main areas symptoms are impacted including the nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, immune system, cardiovascular system and of course the respiratory system.

At Attomarker, we believe we are approaching potential answers to pressing questions on Long COVID. Antibodies are a vital part of our immune system, when analysing patient antibody responses across a range of COVID variants, it becomes evident that individual immunity, and consequently a person’s vulnerability varies significantly. We call these individual responses immunity endotypes.

Behind the Science

Studies which involved neuroimaging of patients with Long Covid concluded that structural changes in the brain’s grey and white matter, particularly in regions associated with memory and sensory processing have occurred suggesting a direct impact on ‘neural networks’ thus leading to impairments in these individual’s cognitive thinking.

Functional disturbances, which include symptoms such as chronic headaches and/or migraines, dizziness and sensory issues also allude to ongoing nervous system dysfunction.

Autoimmune responses add a layer of complexity, as the immune system may continue to attach the body’s tissues, including the nervous system, contributing to neurologic symptoms associated with Long COVID.
